This is my mother's recipe for homemade Kahlua which came with a sticky note attached which reads "Great Kahlua for White Russians!" My mother got the recipe from her mother who made Kahlua every Christmas to hand out as gifts.
Ingredients
  • 3½ cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons Yuban Instant Coffee dissolved in ½ cup cold water
  • 5th of Vodka
  • 3 teaspoons of glycerin
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Combine sugar and water in a pot and cook over medium heat until it reaches a boil. Let boil for 10 minutes.
  2. Set the pot aside and let the mixture cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine the coffee, Vodka, Glycerin and Vanilla and mix well.
  4. Add sugar mixture and stir.
  5. Let cool and bottle for later.
Notes
You will have to ask for the liquid glycerin at your local pharmacy. It is kept behind the counter, not sold on the shelves. Expect to get some strange looks and/or questions when you ask for it. It is used as a sweetener and preservative so you could skip it altogether, but it was part of my grandmother's recipe and it's the way my mother always made it.
